The Courtneys to release new single 'Silver Velvet'
Drift back to the nostalgic sounds of the 1990s as Vancouver power pop punkers The Courtneys release new single ‘Silver Velvet’ on legendary Kiwi record label Flying Nun Records on 17 February.
Musical influences are rife throughout this record with the girls paying homage to everyone from Teenage Fanclub to Pavement to Australian indie outfit Eddy Current Suppression Ring. There is a nakedness and confrontational honesty to their lyrics and these are delivered in coruscating fashion by singer/drummer Jen Twynn Payne – added to the dreamy guitar riffs by Courtney Loove [not a typo] to create an accessible and catchy sound enlivened by the punk essence of Sydney Koke’s driving basslines. This blending of styles comes together to create their self-styled ‘artisanal grunge’ sound and means their second album is an infectious affair that is both strange and familiar and will be keenly enjoyed by all those hooked on early 90s UK indie bands.
