Mac DeMarco announces new album This Old Dog
Mac DeMarco today released two new singles, This Old Dog and My Old Man ahead of his first full-album release since 2014’s Salad Days.
DeMarco’s woozy, melancholic sound has been described as ‘slacker rock’ or self-described by Mac as ‘jizz-jazz’. Written during his move from Queens, New York to Los Angeles will This Old Dog reflect this leap into the unknown. New city, new sound?
DeMarco says: “I demoed a full album, and as I was moving to the West Coast I thought I’d get to finishing it quickly. But then I realized that moving to a new city, and starting a new life takes time. Usually I just write, record, and put it out; no problem. But this time, I wrote them and they sat. When that happens, you really get to know the songs. It was a different vibe."
While the two tracks released today are unequivocally Demarc-ian in nature, they tease a more mature sound. My Old Man marries bluesy vocals with feather-light instrumentals. This Old Dog also drips with a trademark uplifting melancholia. A line bands like The Kinks and The Smiths have navigated so well historically.
This Old Dog is released 5 May via Captured Tracks.
