Premiere - 'Hurricane' by Nick Power
As an eerie hiss closes Nick Power’s ‘Hurricane’, you’re left in no doubt of the lo fi recording context.
Recorded over a two-week period in a static caravan in North Wales, using only an acoustic guitar, pots and pans, faraway police sirens and a Casio synthesiser, Power’s debut album ‘Caravan’ accompanies his latest book of the same name.
Sonically this is a territory explored by fellow DIY gems Nebraska, Lone Pigeon's Concubine Rice or Beck's One Foot in the Grave. In fact, remember when Justin Vernon romantically spent three months recording in a desolate Wisconsin cabin? Well this is North Wales and an altogether different romance. Broken hearts are replaced by broken beaches, skinny love gives way to skinny men clutching foxes on dancefloors.
Completing a cycle of three books, Caravan, builds on Power’s previous published work, Small Town Chase (2014) and Holy Nowhere (2015), which chronicled growing up in a provincial town in the north of England.
Power said: “Caravan is a book about caravan parks across Britain. I’m drawn to these purpose-built holding-pens for suburbanites and city families who spirit themselves away to the coast or nondescript fields next to A-roads. The accompanying music was recorded in the middle of that familiar wilderness.”
In Caravan readers traverse a world of unexplained power cuts, dog thieves, midnight convoys and militant dog walkers; where kids on scrambler bikes invade empty beachfront show-homes. In violent, funny and sometimes surreal writing, Caravan presents a journey through Britain’s seldom-sensed underbelly. Power continues: “The caravan sites I visited as a kid were as magical and ridiculous as the Christmas grotto, or pantomime sets. I remember stroking a fox in the clubhouse once. A man had it in his arms on the dance floor. ‘Caravan’ takes in elements of my life, while exploring the lives of a number of different characters, using poems, monologues and short stories.”
300 copies of the Caravan book are released on Friday 27 October, including the album. Keep an eye on @Nickpower82 for details.
