Jürgen Partenheimer: 'Lichtschwarm' exhibition
Jürgen Partenheimer is among the most renowned German artists of his generation and his exhibition at the White Cube, Bermondsey is a captivating insight of the artist's most profound work. It is a calm and sensual exploration of the intimacy of nature and is elevated by the contrast of the stark, industrial space which it occupies.
The piece ‘La Caida del Humo’ presents 275 unbleached sticks of beeswax on wood hanging on 11 hemp strings - fits the space beautifully. The high ceilings of the White Cube give a cascading effect to the piece and within the light airy space there is a tangible breeze which moves each of the 11 strings; reaffirming the sense of nature.
This exhibition is Partenheimer’s first in London and includes a multitude of works, from installations to delicate ceramics and gentle paintings. There is a discordant quality to much of the work that is both engaging and unsettling as Partenheimer employs his technique of “reduction, asymmetry and imperfection to propose alternative modes of perception”.
As you walk through the exhibition, the prowess of the quietly colourful paintings contrast with the walls patterned with illustrated wallpaper - drawing you into an intimacy with the installation juxtaposed with the White Cube itself.
The 'Lichtschwarm' exhibition is open at the White Cube in Bermondsey until the 18th June 2017.
