Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Choir announce UK return
The award-winning anti-consumerist gospel shouters and Earth-loving urban activists, Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Choir, will return to the UK for a whistle-stop tour of the country.
Encouraging us all to join the struggle to avert the threatened Shopacolypse, Reverend Billy and his group discuss the constant controversy caused by American president Donald Trump. Expect humour, great music and an unshakable belief in madness, with outpourings covering issues on global advertising, multinational control, climate change, the threat of nuclear war and supermarket domination.
The satirical comic and actor, Reverend Billy Talent is not only the mastermind behind this popular tour, but also a renowned columnist and performance activist, beginning his experimental preaching in Times Square in 1994. Preaching with the Church of Stop Shopping, a New York based secular political religion founded in 1999, he has held ‘services’ in wide range of locations. Writing for a New York newspaper called ‘Trump Depression Hotline’, Talent brings mindfulness, hilarity and a no nonsense attitude to these dark times.
Past services have featured in theatres, churches, community centres, forests, parking lots, shopping malls, and perhaps most importantly, inside stores, as close to the cash register as they can get, within spitting distance of the point of purchase. Accompanied by singers, his ‘retail Interventions’ inside chain stores, has resulted in him being legally banned from every branch of Starbucks in the USA, with the coffee giant issuing a memo to its managers ‘What should I do if Reverend Billy is in my store?’ Since Trump, the Frankenstein of shopping culture, won - or stole - the election, the church has been a repository of community anguish.
The choir has opened for Neil Young, been produced by Laurie Anderson, and hosted a Black Lives Matter benefit with Joan Baez as well as hosting their own parades, boycotts, and protests – all whilst singing multiple harmonies. To date they have performed in, and Billy has exorcised cash registers in, over a dozen countries and four continents.
Now with the backing of various Critics, including the Guardian, and accreditations at the Sundance Film Festival for their feature film ‘Preacher With an Unknown God’ , the Reverend heads to the UK to share his political beliefs and shame Trump to a whole new audience.
Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Choir’s latest show, 'Trump Depression Hotline Tour,' will visit Liverpool’s Cornerstone Theatre on Tuesday 24 October.
