Destroyer shares video for 'Tinseltown Swimming in Blood'
Inspired by Chris Marker's 1962 science fiction short film La Jetée, Karen Zolo (aka KC) directs Destroyer’s latest music video for his track, 'Tinseltown Swimming in Blood.' The track features on Destroyer's upcoming LP, 'Ken.'
Addressing contemporary issues of identity, borders, and race, KC combines Destroyer’s relaxed 80’s synth beat, melodic trumpet and emotive lyrics, with the original film’s unique and simplistic format, to create a distinctive and melancholic atmosphere.
Including a montage of black & white still photographs, the video stars Destroyer's Dan Bejar alongside Anisa Tejpar. It portrays an enjoyable day out for two lovers at a museum, before things take a dramatic turn at the end.
With a clear subdued lyrical theme of regret and revenge, the carefully crafted monochromatic sequence reflects the sombre atmosphere felt throughout 'Tinseltown Swimming in Blood.'
KC said of the video: "I'd just had a conversation about artist Chris Marker with a friend when I was approached to make a music video for the upcoming Destroyer album. I had no idea what the song even sounded like, but the only idea I had was to remake Chris Marker's La Jetée as faithfully as possible. It's not just an homage to the great cine-poet; it's also about the medium of film, about still photography. It would have been a billion times easier and less stressful to shoot it digitally, but it was worth it.”
Destroyer will play selected UK live dates throughout December.
'Ken' is released on 20th October via Merge Records.
